NCL Covid-19 response System update 17 July

NCL’s system is continuing to increase the amount of routine and planned care that we are able to restart, including dentistry. As always, our top priority continues to be the safety of all patients and residents as well as our NHS staff.


We recognise that Covid-19 presents exceptional difficulties and uncertainties for patients and all providers within primary and secondary care are focussed on supporting patients throughout their clinical pathway. 


We want people to feel safe coming to appointments at hospitals, clinics and at GP surgeries. We have implemented infection prevention and control measures to keep patients and staff as safe as possible, including physical distancing, face masks for all staff, patients and visitors and appropriate use of PPE. We have reduced the number of walk-in clinics so that people can be asked screening questions before they visit services. Patients attending appointments for planned care are also asked to self-isolate and are tested in advance of their treatment, where appropriate.


We appreciate that some people will still be nervous of attending appointments and have committed that in this unprecedented period patients will be kept on the waiting list, if they choose to defer their appointments or procedures. This policy will be reviewed regularly.


Providers across NCL have been collaborating to reduce waiting lists across medical and surgical specialities, such as ophthalmology. We are appointing a coordinating provider and establishing clinical networks to work together to prioritise the patients with the most urgent clinical needs and ensure we are using NCL resources effectively.


As we look to the future of health and care in NCL, we want to learn from and build on the commitment of our communities who came together to support each other. This week saw the first meeting of NCL’s volunteering network, which is aiming to ensure a more consistent approach to managing volunteers across NCL. We have seen during the past few months how valuable community support is for some of our most vulnerable residents and this Network will help to ensure we are maximising the impact of the fantastic support that volunteers can provide to health and care services.
