Clinical Advice and Guidance use up 44%
North London Partners’ Clinical Advice and Guidance (CAG) service is going from strength to strength. In October 2018 there were 1,239 CAG referrals made compared with 863 in September 2018 - an increase of 44%. In addition from April to November 61% of CAG requests were responded to within 2 working days and work continues to improve the response rate across the four main acute trusts in north central London (NCL).
The service is for GPs to access advice from a consultant of a particular specialty when they are considering making a hospital referral.
The increase in take up is good news for patients who may be saved unnecessary face-to-face outpatient appointments. It will also provide GPs with a good opportunity to increase their clinical knowledge and skills and it is beneficial for consultants who can use their expertise and knowledge to see the appropriate patients sooner.
Last December over 40 GPs and hospital consultants met to discuss how CAG could be developed further following audits in both primary care and acute care. That day was a great success and 12 areas for future improvements have been identified including the development of some frequently asked questions, exploring some IT developments and linkage to other planned care pathways.
