NLP programmes helping deliver the NHS Long Term Plan
January saw the publication of The NHS Long Term plan. This builds on the Five Year Forward View and aims to set out plans to address the current challenges facing the NHS (funding, staffing, increasing health inequalities, and pressure from a growing and ageing population).

Lots of the ambitions set out in The Long Term Plan are already underway in north central London (NCL) or are a logical next step in terms of the work already being delivered by partners.
The clinical priorities, set out in the plan, are reflected through NCL wide programmes of work currently underway to improve the following areas: cancer, cardiovascular disease, maternity and mental health.
This is combined with ongoing local work to redesign health and care services in the way set out in the plan. Locally we have made real progress already in:
- Supporting the development of networks (groups of practices typically covering 30–50,000 residents)
- Redesigning and simplifying emergency and urgent care services;
- Moving towards new models of planned care services.
The plan’s strong focus on both workforce and digital as drivers for change is reflected in our dedicated programmes for these areas.
More broadly, our programmes of work have provided a strong foundation for partners to come together to work in new ways.
